This week, my school screened I’m Not Racist…Am I? for faculty, staff and parents, as a part of it’s ongoing efforts to explore equity and diversity issues in our school community. I’m Not Racist…Am I? is an output of The Calhoun School‘s Kellogg funded initiative, Deconstructing Race. The documentary takes a look at the lives of 12 New York City high school students to begin understanding how their generation experiences racism and how they address it. So much of what several of the black students experienced and how they processed it reminded me of my own experiences in college and those of my friends. I started college almost 20 years ago. I’m Not Racist…Am I? is definitely a worthwhile watch, if for no other reason, than to confirm society’s unchanged and pervasive racism.
